The Red Panda needs our help
Red pandas are in trouble. Susceptible to poaching for their fur, red pandas are also endangered due to habitat loss through deforestation. With decreased numbers, red pandas are also vulnerable to inbreeding and a limited genetic pool.
Red Panda Facts
-
Endangered Scale Level
Red pandas current Endangered status means they are at very high risk of becoming extinct in the wild unless current trends reverse.
-
Herbivorous
The red panda feeds mostly on bamboo shoots and leaves, sometimes also eating fruits and blossoms. They have developed an extra "thumb" that allows them to more easily grip and manipulate bamboo (along with tree branches as they climb).
-
Behavior
Red pandas are both nocturnal and crepuscular (active during twilight), and spend most of their time sleeping with bouts of activity between. You may see them stretched out or curled up in a ball depending on the weather!
-
Species
There are two sub-species of red panda - the Himalayan red panda and the Chinese red panda. These distinct sub-species are essentially separated by the Siang River in Tibet.
-
Taxonomy
The red panda is actually not at all related to the giant panda, and is most closely related to raccoons and weasels. It is the only remaining member of its taxonomic family (Ailuridae), and was actually discovered BEFORE the giant panda, making it the original panda!
-
Life in Captivity
Impressive treetop acrobats, red pandas are one of the most frequent escape artists from zoos. They are also susceptible to stress in captivity and have relatively low captive reproductive rates.

How to help the Red Panda
Each purchase of a red panda stuffed animal provides funding to the Red Panda Network to continue conservation efforts of the red panda and other flagship species in Nepal.
Snugglebug provides a monthly donation for conservation activities, as well as symbolically adopting Sita, a red panda mother to two cubs. The conservation funds of symbolic adoption also go towards protecting other flagship species, such as clouded leopards and Himalayan black bears.
